Otoplasty

Otoplasty

Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, is designed to change the appearance or position of the ears to create a more balanced look. Patients with very large ears, misshapen ears, or ears that stick out from the head at a strong angle, can undergo this procedure to restore their self-confidence and improve their appearance.

Why Undergo Otoplasty

The ears are not typically the first thing someone notices about you but if they are larger than average, stick out at an angle, or are misshapen or deformed, most people will notice them first. Many people with visible irregularities of the ears are self-conscious about their appearance and usually try to hide their flaws with a different hairstyle or a hat. The otoplasty procedure can correct these irregularities to create a more balanced appearance.

Dr. Kilaru has extensive experience performing reconstructive and facial plastic surgery procedures. He will customize the otoplasty procedure so that the new shape and size of the ears complements your natural face shape and looks very natural. The procedure may involve pinning back the ears, resizing the earlobes, repositioning the entire ear, or performing minor reshaping of the ears.

The Otoplasty Procedure

An otoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Dr. Kilaru will determine what type of anesthesia will be most appropriate for you based on the extent of surgery, techniques used, and other factors. The surgery usually involves creating a small incision on the back surface of the ear. If Dr. Kilaru needs to access the front of the ear, the incisions are made within the small folds of the ear so they are easy to hide.

These incisions allow for easy access to the carriage and inside rim of the ear for reshaping, resizing, and restructuring. Stitches are used to close the incision and dressings or support may be applied to help with healing.

What to Expect with an Otoplasty

Patients see a visible improvement immediately after surgery with ongoing results as the ears heal and the new shape starts to form. If the ears have been pinned closer to the head, any scars are hidden within the ear so nobody will be able to tell surgery was performed.

Tanning beds, excessive force or motion, and strenuous physical activities need to be avoided for a few weeks after surgery. Dr. Kilaru will provide specific post-op instructions to ensure the bandages stay in place for a certain period of time and there is no risk of infection.

If you are tired of hiding your ears or feeling self-conscious about the appearance of your ears, find out if an otoplasty is right for you. Schedule your private consultation with Dr. Kilaru today.
